What Does a Triangle with an Exclamation Point Mean?

dashboard warning symbol - triangle with exclamation point

Your Land Rover warning lights can teach you about a wide range of potential problems and let you know when it’s time to schedule service, but what does a triangle with an exclamation point mean when it appears on your dashboard? This indicator lets you know that there’s a Critical Warning Message that you need to read as soon as possible, but it doesn’t actually indicate a specific problem. Really, the triangle with an exclamation point is a catch-all warning light, designed to alert you to issues that your other lights won’t catch!

How to Respond When You See a Triangle with an Exclamation Point

If the Critical Warning Message indicator appears on the dashboard, assess the color immediately:

  • If you see a Red Critical Warning Message, you should stop the vehicle as soon as possible and read the message. It’s probably unsafe to drive the vehicle, and you may wish to call Land Rover Roadside Assistance at 1-800-637-6837.
  • If the Critical Warning Message appears in Yellow or Amber, the vehicle is safe to drive. (These less severe indicators are also sometimes identified as “General Warning Messages”.) However, you should still read the warning as quickly as possible, and you’ll most likely want to visit a Paramus-area auto service center in the very near future.

Reading your Land Rover’s Critical Warning Messages is simple. You’ll just use your steering wheel-mounted controls to open the Message Center and read the alert. (You can pull up the message on your dashboard, so there’s no need to look through the options on your central touchscreen.)

Use your best judgment to determine what steps to take next, and feel free to contact the Land Rover Paramus service center if you have questions. We’re easy to reach from anywhere near Ridgewood or Jersey City.

What is Causing Your Critical Warning Message?

There isn’t a single way to answer the question about what a triangle with an exclamation point means when it appears on your dashboard. If your light appears alongside the words “Restricted Performance,” the issue may be due to a cracked inlet manifold, a faulty MAF sensor, or a problem with your turbocharger—but it’s always best to schedule service and let an expert take a look. If you have questions after reading the Critical Warning Message through your dashboard, just reach out or make an appointment.
